a toy designed, computed, and manufactured to balance both horizontally and vertically with the same key piece
‘Level’ is a toy-like object that achieves balance in two positions — vertical and horizontal — with the same key-piece. A digital simulation of the model (a recursive function to minimize the distance between the location of a center of mass and a point of stability) was essential to the design of this particular physical attribute. In this simulation, the balancing disc has a defined weight and
form, leaving the properties of the key-piece open for the software to iterate on possible solutions.
The manufacture of the resulting model employed numerical control machining to guarantee a precise physical prototype.
